Linear Algebra with Applications is an introductory text targeted to second or advanced first year undergraduates in engineering or mathematics. The organization of this text is motivated by the authors’ experience which tells them what essential concepts should be mastered by students in a one semester undergraduate Linear Algebra course.

The authors’ main objectives are to fully develop each topic before moving on and to connect topics naturally. The authors take great care to meet both these objectives, because this organization lonear allow instructors teaching from this text to stay on task so that each topic can be covered with the depth required before progressing to the next logical one. As a result the reader is prepared for each new unit and there is no need to repeat a concept in a subsequent chapter when it is utilized.

This text is geared towards an introductory linear algebra course taken by first or second year undergraduate students. However, it offers the opportunity to introduce the importance of abstraction, not fefranza in mathematics, but in many other areas where Linear Algebra is used. Throughout the text, the authors are mindful of the difficulties that students at this level have with abstraction and introduce new concepts first through examples deffranza gently illustrate the idea.

To motivate the definition of an abstract vector space, and the subtle concept of linear independence, the authors use addition and scalar multiplication of vectors in Euclidean Space.

Please try again later. This linear algebra textbook is very clear, linwar, and concise. Other textbooks were quite convoluted. It is perfect for a one-semester introduction at the lower level. It has greatly prepared me to understand advanced linear algebra and work towards my undergraduate degree.


This is a terrible introduction for those studying linear algebra. I found the text very difficult to follow and I did not think that it was applicatoins well organized. There were not enough worked examples and I do not feel that the book adequately intorduction me for the end of chapter quizzes or my final exam for my course. If this is required reading for your course then I would strongly suggest supplementing it with one of the many free linear algebra books that are available online.

I was in one of the first classes to use this book. I didn’t get as good a grade in the class as I would have liked, but that’s not the books fault, hahaha.

One person found this helpful. So far through the semester I like this book. It is easier to follow than my last few math books that dealt with matrices and calculus II. It is unfortunately that my teacher this semester can’t teach, so having a book that I can follow and understand is very nice since I can’t learn any other way.

Definitely a good math book. I needed it for class. It was an okay book. Chances are if you’re a introductiion of the mathematical sciences, your institution’s library is full of archaic tomes that your professor’s professors used.

Tried and true, these books have most of the information you’ll ever need, as well as a lot of obscure facts that confuse rather than enlighten the reader. In addition, the modern student is likely to spend hours with these old texts simply trying to decipher the outdated notation. Speaking as an undergraduate math and physics student, I can honestly say that we just can’t learn from these types of texts anymore. The book in question is a modern version of an introductory undergraduate linear algebra course, with enough material to last two full semesters.

The writing style is comfortable and casual. As opposed to many older math and physics textbooks, the material is presented in a way that makes the reader feel like he or she is having a conversation with a friendly and patient professor during office hours, rather than reading a 50 year old lecture transcript. In this reader’s opinion, the style is similar to that used by David Griffiths in his line of intermediate physics texts. There are six chapters in this text covering systems of linear equations and matrices, linear combinations and independence, vector spaces, linear transformations, eigensystems, and inner product spaces.

Each chapter applicatioms with an interesting and relevant example of an application of each of the covered topics, before the reader is introduced to the actual material. Then, throughout the chapter, and for that matter throughout the book, ideas are introduced that build introductionn previously covered material, ensuring that the reader doesn’t forget central ideas that may have been first presented sections or even chapters earlier.

Examples are plentiful and insightful, often taking the form of additional applications.


Chapter subsections conclude with “Fact Summaries” as well as the obligatory problem sets and rest assured, answers to odd-numbered problems dsfranza given in the back of the book. These questions may be particularly useful for those reviewing for multiple choice exams where time is limited and answers should be found without much mechanical effort I’m looking at you, GREs.

Indeed, this book is not perfect, but no textbook is. Some topics, particularly those later in the text, may be confusing without proper reinforcement from outside sources, be it a good professor or previous courses in discrete mathematics.

Some problems can be a little proof-heavy not my particular strong suit and generally unsatisfying on their own So if matrix A is invertible and orthogonally diagonalizable, then A-inverse is also orthogonally diagonalizable And luckily, I didn’t see any of those dreaded problems where you’re asked to prove part of a theorem that was strategically omitted from the text. While I wouldn’t particularly recommend it for the self studier, with a good professor on your side, DeFranza and Gagliardi’s “Introduction to Linear Algebra with Applications” will help the first or second year undergraduate learn about this incredibly fascinating field of mathematics.

And if you’re smart, you won’t sell this book back at the end of the semester, as it will most definitely help the serious math or physics major as an indispensable reference tool. The book is an adequate introductory presentation of Linear Algebra. However, the solutions manual is absolutely terrible. What the authors did for the accompanying solutions manual is provide all the answers without any demonstation of the work required to solve the problems.

This was pathetic as the greatest value to a text book can be the demonstrated work in the solutions manual. Accordingly, my recommendation to professors considering this text book is to move on until the authors revise the solutions manual.
