I thought I would love this book, since historical fiction is lksboa treat, and even more so when it has a Jewish angle. But this book is lisbla badly-written and badly-edited that it’s a real mess. After a few chapters I was losing track of plot and characters, and was not very interested in either of those. The historical background may have been thoroughly researched but the too-embellished language and too many irrelevant details made it impossible to enjoy learning about the DNF, very disappointed.
The historical background may have been thoroughly researched but the too-embellished language and too many irrelevant details made it impossible to enjoy learning about the important and fascinating period. It’s such a shame – this could uotimo been a really good book. I was really hoping for another Umberto Eco, but this did not even come close. The writing was mediocre at best, and the conclusion was hardly satisfying, as the story became more and more confusing.
I also found Zimler’s random insertions of graphic descriptions of sex and violence annoying and distracting. Caablista didn’t manage to finish this poorly written book.
One of the worst books I’ve read. Most in my book group couldn’t even finish it, and those of us who did regretted having wasted the time doing so. An absurd amount of confusing detail makes it very difficult to keep the many characters straight. I liked the idea of this book, and normally love historical fiction. Perhaps the author, in an effort to emulate a “period piece” lidboa all suggestions from his editor?

With some editing and parsing of the daunting prose this could have been a fun read. Sad to say I didn’t finish it. I just couldn’t get into the story. I was hoping for something different like Name of the Rose or something like that and that’s not what’s here.
