He has this whole new style-you can hear the melody! Bobby Thompson’s Home Page.
There are some good tabs about but a dreadful pile of bad stuff too. Bluegrass tabs are particular offenders because they often contain so much detail that the actual melody timing and emphasis is completely submerged.
I learnt three things about tab early on Dueling Banjos is a classic of the type, there are so many versions and an inexperienced player trying to learn a piece like that from tab is probably biting off more than they can bajnos I don’t doubt that you can play your own tab, particularly if you have been playing for 35 years Banjos an advanced song?

Maybe if you’re playing it like Bobby Thompson but I find them mostly simple. If you can play “Dixie Breakdown” you can play D. Here’s a good tab of the song.
It’s easy and correct but for one note where Eric used a D-tuner. But that doesn’t take anything away from this tab. It isn’t really difficult at all, for a given value of “difficult”. My point is that a lot of inexperienced players aren’t able to look at the tab and see the description you give.
I couldn’t learn it at all, until my teacher relented he was fed up with being asked by every novice who came along and tried to steer me into frailing at first I learnt the basic structure in a couple of afternoons and now I have no trouble with it, I worked it out as a duet with a balalaika last year for a joke on a particularly long and boring offshore trip.
It’s a good overall guide to a fairly simple arrangement and if you can’t follow it, you are probably best off with a ukulele or a kazoo. Hugh, you are right. The tab you gave a link to is the tab that I used a while back to play dueling banjos.
I am a rank beginner and I could play it in a day or two. Nothing in the music world gives me a bigger smile than to help, unless it getting that pay check! Nope, I’m only banjoman here.
But Ilike my real name, Hugh Dueling Banjos with guitar part included If we weren’t all crazy, we’d all go insane. There are many versions around and as some people said most of them doesn’t exactly mimic what is played in the film.
I hesitate to use tah word wrong – In my mind music is never wrong – just interpreted While realizing that this song is a mixture of standard rolls and scales and not very interesting for the intermediate or advanced player I don’t think that this song should be underestimated for a completely different reason – whether we like it or not this is pretty much the “signature” of bluegrass among people who doesn’t know the music.
I just couldn’t figure out how banno could play a string instrument that fast – and had to find out. So I think DB is here to stay and perhaps we should have three “official” correct in the sense of faithfully following the soundtrack arrangements of it.
One for each of the first three years when someone starts learning the banjo in gradually more challenging arrangements and perhaps the same thing with E. Reading this dudling is more entertaining than the tune it’s about! This is how it all gets hashed out You”ll be able to take ”Union” breaks every 45 minutes Hi Banjoman, Interesting discussion. I can’t seem to find DB on Jay Buckey’s site though. Wonder what the problem is? Can anyone point me in the direction of a “reliable” version of Dueling Banjos that has been tabbed “correctly”?

Sorry to re-open the thread – but i’m keen to learn a “standard” version on DB. Hey fellas say I was wondering I can’t get any of these tabs to open for dueling banjos Is there something i have to download in order for them to open up? It always comes up with something like wrong file banjp.
Ok thanks alot for the help, Bryan. There are several types of software for tabs. I don’t know which one you’re looking for, but Tabledit and Tabwin are 2 that are popular. You can download a trial of tabledit and the entire Tabwin free — then you can open most tabs.
There are other software that do tabs, but those are the most used. I have just bought my 1st Banjo and I have already had many requests for Duelin Banjos, so id like to learn it also, but im mainly going to stick banjoss chords, rolls and scales for the time dueliny. But aside that i would like to learn DB so its one I can play.
