Cowles rated it liked it Shelves: A very well-selected collection of previously uncollected writings, some comfortingly familiar, others pleasantly surprising. Among the highlights are his first published short story, “Aftermath of a Lengthy Rejection Slip”; his last short story, “The Other”; his first and last essays; and the first installment of his famous “Notes of a Dirty Old Man” column.
Bukowski would’ve been a dreadful neighbour and friend; he was certainly an awful husband and lover. Most readers either love or detest Charles Bukowski, the poet and novelist infamous for his prodigious worldly appetites. There are still a few WTF moments though. Portions From a Wine-Stained Notebook is essential reading for Bukowski fans, as well as a good introduction for new readers of this innovative, unconventional writer.
Genius could be the ability to say a profound thing in a simple way. Bukowski never wasted a word, and this collection should bukkwski far towards shining a light trom prose in danger of being lost in the shadow of its larger-than-life author. He died in San Pedro, California on March 9, Spender quit, Auden quit, Olson begged to the crowd. I especially liked the story “Workout” which is about Bukowski jerking it while he watches two young women grinding their cunts against each other. He also worked in a dog biscuit factory, a slaughterhouse, a cake chrles cookie factory, and he hung posters in New York City subways.
While this book may not win Bukowski any new fans, those who love his acid wit and unflinching look at the lives of real people will not be disappointed.
Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Mailer became an intelligent journalist, as did Capote. Those new to his work will have the good fortune of discovering a writer who could break your heart, make you howl, and slap you off your bar-stool you in a single sentence.
